Sheffield Sporting Matters

Few people appreciate Sheffield's place in sporting history, which stretches back to 1857 when the world's first football club was founded and the first soccer rule book was produced. Almost 140 years later and another first for the city when, in 1995, the Sports Council named Sheffield as Britain's first National City of Sport.

Sheffield has some of the best sporting facilities in Britain. Many of them were built for the World Student Games which Sheffield hosted in 1991, something which Sheffielders should be proud of, as they are second only to the Olympics in terms of world sporting events.

Ponds Forge International Sports Centre has Olympic standard diving pools, a leisure pool with lazy river, flumes and jacuzzi as well as a health and fitness suite, sports hall and eating places.

Don Valley Stadium (now demolished!!) was a spectacular setting for International athletic events as well as playing host to the worlds top pop stars like the Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson and our own Def Leppard.

The range of sporting activities on offer is amazing ............... swimming, badminton, squash, football, athletics, rugby, basketball, netball, ten-pin bowling, ice skating, shooting, riding, boules, indoor climbing, the list goes on and on. There are also many dance and fitness studios and last but not least, winter sports in the shape of Sheffield's Ski Village, the largest and most innovative dry-ski centre in Europe...well it was, but has burnt down twice and been vandalised. Plenty of rumours about it's revival but so far, no action!

When it comes to sport, Sheffield's got the lot!
